Chapter 12

Cash

Just when I start to warm up to this town and its residents, this happens. I groan and try to extricate myself from the situation. I don’t even know how to put this into words. The only thing I do know is that Didi isn’t helping matters.

“A little help over here?” I bite out, looking at her sitting criss-cross on the driveway, holding her stomach and laughing her you-know-what off while Mrs. Crazy Pants over here is squeezing me like I’m some teddy bear.

“Honey, you’ve got to let the nice man go,” her husband says, trying to pry her hands off me.

I’ve seen fans do some crazy things, but Mrs. Jameson takes the cake, hanging on to me like I’m some life preserver while crooning who knows what into my ear.

“You’re ... fine...” Didi puffs out, standing up and trying to catch her breath. Between the three of us, we finally pry the woman from my body. I’m drenched in sweat and ready to get out of here.

“I’m going to take her inside to cool off. Call me if you have any other questions,” Mr. Jameson says. Somehow he manages to get her inside the house, but she refuses to go any farther, choosing to stare at me through the window, her hands making a heart shape.

I shake my head at the sight, and Didi snickers when she notices it. “Who knew you had such a big fan club in town? Fanny can’t wait to get you over to her house.”

I groan, thinking about the cabbage woman I have to face again as soon as we make it back to the office. I can’t take anyone else swooning all over me today. “Why don’t I go wait in the car while you interview Mr. Wickers?” I suggest. With my luck, he has a daughter, or his dog decides to fall in love with me.

Didi is still laughing and shakes her head. “Oh no, you’re not skipping out on me. We have to get you back on the horse straight away.” She bends down to pick up her notepad and purse and pulls down the driveway and onto the sidewalk with her.

“What are you talking about? I didn’t fall, Mrs. Jameson did.” I look over my shoulder. The woman is still standing there, nose pressed to the glass.

“You had a bad experience on the job. It happens to all of us.”

I snort. “Doubt that.”

“I could tell you stories. Anyway, you’re not going to hide. You’re coming with me. Besides, the man has a dog. A big one.” She slows her steps as we approach the property next door.

“Are you scared of dogs?” I ask.

“Not exactly scared. I have a healthy respect for them.” She waves at the old man sitting in a foldout chair halfway up his driveway. The dog, a Great Dane that I’m pretty sure is taller than me, stands up against the chain-link fence that surrounds three sides of the property.

The wooden fence only stretches between the two adjacent properties.
